The season is starting up again and the first round couldn’t have been any better. Amy and Jonathan are friends who have been together since I have known them. Their brilliant minds crossed paths and resulted in a pairing full of laughter, scientific discussions and wit. I loved the engagement session we shared. I could literally watch these two for hours debate about scientific research. Speaking of, we started off in Amy’s lab at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and made our rounds throughout the amazing architecture. Following the colorful display of test tubes, we found ourselves on the streets of South Lake Union enjoying the best Spring has to offer with cherry blossoms in each direction.

Excitement is building up for Amy and Jonathan as their special day quickly approaches. But in the meantime, we hit the streets this past Sunday to South Lake Union to visit Amy’s lab at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center for some colorful explorations. Even if we are in our twenties, who says we still can’t have with test tubes and water colors?

More photos will be up soon. I’ll give you some hints: textured walls, cherry blossoms, bamboo and a whole lot of laughing. I can’t wait to share!

Haiti fundraiser: Portraits of Tilden + family

Back in January, my dearest friend Billy Shih did something amazing for his birthday. He inspired friends, family members, and strangers to make a difference when Haiti was struck by a tragic force leaving the area in ruins. Billy stepped up and helped raise over $16,000 from over 100 individual in donations for Doctors without Borders. How did he do it? Well read below from an old family friend, Jamie Hsu:

I think this is a great story, because I remember how I was 10+ years ago, and I was not as selfless.

Back when Haiti experienced that devastating, Kevin Wong (www.kvwphoto.com) and some of his friends wanted to find a way to procure donations for relief efforts to Haiti. They started pimping themselves out to help people move or “whatever” in exchange for donations.

I have known Kevin all of his life as we grew up as family friends. And I know that Kevin is an extremely talented photographer.

So in exchange for a donation to Doctors Without Borders, Kevin agreed to take some family photos for us.

We went for the Fun Forest as the setting because of its impending closure.

Baby Layla now 4 months old

Aaaaand we’re back with Cori and Matt, except this time the focus was baby Layla Trahan. If you recall, it was only a few short months ago that I was taking photos of Layla in the form of a belly. She was so cooperative and calm for the majority of the session, which I think we were all grateful for, making the whole process a breeze. We made it through three different outfits, with only one casualty by spit. Enjoy the monkeys and tutu!

Boudoir at Hotel Max: Exploring beauty and lighting

It’s early morning and we were hanging out at Hotel Max in downtown Seattle. The sun was hitting the side of the building just right giving us a couple hours to use the natural lighting. My friend slash international super model, Jessica, was happy and willing to help out with this boudoir project. The collaboration was set up to show off a softer side of sexy and beauty – at least for my part. There were a few key themes that I wanted to deliver: softer / warmer lighting, relaxed nature, strong postures and some close up comps.

Taking on this project was an incredibly educational process and my main take aways were this: 1) sexy doesn’t have to be explicit, 2) women and all their being are beautiful, 3) oh, and my friends are pretty awesome. Family time with Prarthana, Ed, Tarak and little Avi

Time certainly flies. It didn’t seem like too long ago that I was taking photos of Avi when he was a little peanut with tiny little toes. To my delight, it was a warm welcome back into their (new!) home back in December with the smell of homemade pancakes topped with homemade jam. It was a casual Saturday morning with the kids running around and the family gathering around the table to enjoy a little breakfast. Let me tell you this, if you dig pancakes, you will have to try the ones Ed makes. If there was a Facebook page for it, I’d be a fan already. Check out the photos from our morning together playing around the house and hanging out with the chickens. Yes, chickens!

Sara + Tony: 11.21.2009 Engagement Shoot

It only took three passes to get to Treehouse Point, and it was worth every U-turn. Located in Issaquah (east of Seattle), Treehouse Point makes a great spot for deep woodsy exploration with a hint of magic. If you’re looking for something adventurous – you know, Lord of the Rings meets Tarzan sort of thing. =) Never fear, we kept it classy too. I definitely recommend it not only as a place for photos, but also as a place for the weekend if you want to get away from all the busy urban noise without having to drive out too far.

So thank you Sara for finding this amazing place for us to hang out and take photos. A special thank you for braving the weather and all the steep paths we walked through to get to all the special little places!

Senior Portraits at the Arboretum and Alki

While you might think that Seattle is a gloomy city with rain clouds just moments away from ruining a perfectly nice walk around town, well, you’re right. It’s October! BUT! I did get to squeeze out the last bit of Summer on the last weekend of September to do my first senior portrait session. We started off at the Arboretum next to the University of Washington (Go Huskies!) and made our way around the park before heading out to Alki Beach in West Seattle.

To all the residents of Alki, thank you for letting us borrow the side of your homes, your garage doors and outdoor sheds. They’re great backgrounds!

Cori (Mostly) & Matt’s Maternity Session

Laughter. Smiles. Funny faces. Oh, and not to mention monkeys! (I’ll save everyone from any banana jokes, promise!) Cori and Matt invited me to take photos with only weeks counting down. We quickly got settled in and made our rounds in a few of the rooms including the nursery, bedroom and what I like to classify as Matt’s man cave. By the time we wrapped up all the indoor photos, we only had about 30 minutes left before sunset! So we made haste over the Alki and parked at the nearest spot by the beach.

The protocol was simple, “walk that way and just enjoy the sunset.” Playing paparazzi, the candid moments just fell into place. Actually, I think they were posing, but they were so natural at it, you couldn’t even tell! The two were even open to walking into the water with me. Mind you, Seattle water isn’t the warmest of waters to dip your toe into. All said and done, I think we beat the clock and made the best of our time together. Enjoy!
